Surfing Politics

September 13th, 2008

It’s shocking to see how much politics are creeping into my regular reading habits lately. Though I follow a broad selection of blogs and occasionally check reddit, opinions about McCain/Palin and Obama/Biden are overflowing the banks. Even comments on apps from Apple’s App Store degenerate into political debates.

What’s really fascinated me is how pervasive media messages, speeches, and statements are in modern society. The term ‘pork’–a relatively commonplace term to mean “the other white meat”, has taken on this amazing new meaning in the last 5 days. Everyone–the news, the blogs, and the commenters is talking about the “new” pork–this whole thing about earmarks and governmental handouts.

It’s incredible how fast thoughts and opinions can get spread these days. And how something so careless and simple can be so long lasting and sticky. Back in January, some slimy, disrespecting person wrote an e-mail saying that Barack Obama is a radial muslim that doesn’t recite the pledge of allegiance. The version I saw even had a sentence stating that Snopes confirmed this e-mail as a fact.

In fact, Snopes says clearly that this is false. But the damage is very much done and burned into the minds of people.

But all he has shown me is that he is a liar and a fraud and a hater of women. He goes against the democratic traditions and wants to lead the country he won’t even pledge allegiance to. — Political Punch

you won’t have to burn it down…bho and his muslim ties will… — Political Punch

IsBarackObamaAMuslim.com? No.

Without question though, the “truth”, even the distorted fashion that is part of modern politics, really got left behind in the last week of salvos. Sickening…

Beijing in September

September 4th, 2008

I’ve been back in the US for the last 2.5 weeks on business–an interesting respite from the hustle and bustle of Beijing.

I got back yesterday afternoon and many things feel different. The city feels calm and relaxed, the weather cool and comfortable, and a nice breeze blowing around the decently clear air.

They say that Autumn is the best time to be in Beijing–I’m beginning to see why.
